Former Stanford righty Joey Volchko was one of the more sought-after arms in the transfer portal this offseason. Originally crystal balled to the blue bloods of LSU and Arkansas, Volchko went a different route and signed with Georgia to be the Bulldogs' Friday guy. He was the headliner of their massive transfer portal class.
NIL numbers are not public, but it's safe to assume Volchko was handed a fair share of bread by the Bulldogs. The industry as a whole saw the clear upside in Volchko despite his disappointing 6.19 ERA in 17 starts for Stanford. He struck out only 18 percent of hitters faced while walking over 12 percent, despite possessing the kind of stuff any college coach dreams of, housed in a 6-foot-4, 220-pound frame. There was clearly plenty of meat still left on the bone and a layer of potential to be unlocked with Volchko.
