In a short period of time, West Virginia righty Dawson Montesa has turned himself from an unknown to a need-to-know name for teams in the middle rounds searching for traits and upside in the college pitching crop. Unheralded as a prep out of Queens Metropolitan High School in New York, Montesa made his way to Division II at Adelphi University to continue his baseball career.
Montesa's freshman year wasn't the most fruitful, as he walked an elevated number of hitters and ended with a 7.36 ERA in 44 innings. It wasn't all bad as he led his team in strikeouts as a freshman despite the lackluster peripherals. But such results at a Division II school don't tend to bode well for future big leaguers, even if it was just his first season.
